CAMERON CROWE DOCUMENTARY OPENING TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL LIVE ELTON JOHN PERFORMANCE Posted: 02 Mar 2011 11:29 AM PST 2011 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL TAKES OPENING NIGHT OUTDOORS WITH THE WORLD PREMIERE OF CAMERON CROWE'S THE UNION ON THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN TWO MUSICAL LEGENDS: *** OPENING NIGHT TO CLOSE WITH A PERFORMANCE BY *** Tribeca Celebrates its 10th Edition with Free, Open to the Public Screening and Musical Performances The Tribeca Film Festival today announced that the world premiere of Cameron Crowe's documentary The Union will open the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by American Express. A performance by the film's subject – Elton John – will follow the free, outdoor screening to kick off the Festival's 10th edition and thank the New York City community for its ongoing support. The Union will premiere on Wednesday, April 20 at the North Cove at the World Financial Plaza. The 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival will take place from April 20 through May 1, 2011. The Union is an unprecedented and personal look at the creative life of Elton John and the remarkable collaborative album with Leon Russell, produced by T-Bone Burnett. Begun in November 2009, the filming captures the entire writing and recording process of the heralded album John recorded with his early-career idol, Russell. Never before filmed in his composing process, John¹s creation of The Union is an extremely candid portrait of one of the world's most treasured artists and performers, and his extraordinary journey of the heart — one that sent him to powerfully reclaim and reinvigorate the life and musical career of Russell, to whom John hadn't spoken in over 38 years. The Union is a captivating and exhilarating real-life experience of musical creation and generosity, directed by Cameron Crowe. Award-winning music producer T-Bone Burnett, John's lifelong lyricist Bernie Taupin, icons Neil Young and Brian Wilson, legendary R&B organist Booker T. Jones, steel guitarist Robert Randolph and a 10-piece gospel choir are featured on the album, while appearances by Stevie Nicks and Don Was color the documentary about a love of making music. "It's a special opportunity to open our 10th Festival in this distinct and unique way—not only are we inviting the community to join us for the world premiere of Cameron Crowe's film The Union, but to have Elton, whose music transcends generations, perform after is an extraordinary gift to our Festival and more specifically the downtown community," said co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival Jane Rosenthal. "Cameron Crowe gives audiences unprecedented access into Elton John and Leon Russell's artistic process in an emotional and realistic way." “I’m absolutely thrilled that the documentary about “The Union” will premiere opening night at the Tribeca Film Festival," said Elton John. “As a longtime fan of both artists, it was a pleasure to spend a year filming their collaboration," said Cameron Crowe. "We can’t wait to show it to one of the greatest audiences in the world, the Tribeca Film Festival." The 2011 Tribeca Film Festival will announce its feature film slate on March 7 and 14, 2011. JOHN GALLIANO FIRED FROM DIOR AFTER ANTI-SEMITIC RANT LEAKS NATALIE PORTMAN STATEMENT Posted: 02 Mar 2011 09:43 AM PST John Galliano was fired from Dior after a viral video of his anti-Semitic rant at a bar leaked online. The flambouyant fashion designer was scheduled to debut his latest collection at Paris Fashion week. John Galliano released an apology but is it already too late to save his career? A video of an inebriated Galliano praising Hitler and the subsequent firing of one of the industry’s most talented and moneymaking designers has sent shock waves through Paris Fashion Week. Galliano broke his silence Wednesday with a statement released via his British lawyers. Galliano’s downfall began last Thursday when he was detained in a drunken state and questioned about accusations that he hurled anti-Semitic insults at a couple in a Parisian cafe. Another complaint about a different incident followed. Then a video of yet another incident surfaced Monday in which Galliano said “I love Hitler,” prompting Dior to fire its star designer after 14 years with the company. In the statement Wednesday, Galliano said “I completely deny the claims made against me and have fully cooperated with the police investigation” into the initial cafe case. But he said he fully accepts “that the accusations made against me have greatly shocked and upset people.” “I only have myself to blame and I know that I must face up to my own failures,” he said. “In all my work my inspiration has been to unite people of every race, creed, religion and sexuality by celebrating their cultural and ethnic diversity through fashion. That remains my guiding light.” Since his appointment in 1996, Galliano made an indelible mark on the storied House of Dior, with theatrical, often outrageous, runway shows that were among the most-anticipated displays on the Paris calendar. But his behavior finally pushed Dior over the edge. Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman, who is Jewish and the new advertising face of the Miss Dior Cherie perfume line, expressed fury over Galliano’s remarks. While Galliano was struggling with his inner demons, fashionistas as Paris Fashion Week were debating who would replace him at Dior, which battles crosstown rival Chanel for the title of world’s top fashion house. Many fashion critics, editors and stylists put their money on Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, whose dark, S&M-steeped creations for Givenchy have won him a rabidly devoted fan base. Naysayers, though, note that Tisci has done little to boost sales at Givenchy, which is also owned by Dior parent company LVMH Moet Hennessy, and suggest that Dior, as the group’s moneymaking locomotive, might be looking for someone with a more proven sales record. Alber Elbaz would fit that profile. The Moroccan-born Israeli has transformed Lanvin from a musty old Paris label to one of fashion’s hottest properties. Rumors have long swirled that he would be a shoo-in to replace Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel once the 77-year-old uber-designer retires, but Elbaz has always insisted he’s happy where he is. “In a perfect world, it would be Alber” tapped to replace Galliano, said Dana Thomas, a veteran fashion critic and author of “Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster.” Other potential candidates include Oliver Theyskens, who’s been working for New York-based commercial house Theory after being dismissed from Nina Ricci, and Yves Saint Laurent’s Italian-born designer Stefano Pilati. The scandal has thrown Dior into such flux that it was not immediately clear when it would announce any new appointment. Dior still plans to show its fall-winter 2011-2012 collection as scheduled Friday. A Dior official told The Associated Press on Wednesday the house is focusing on preparing for the show and would not comment on discussions of a replacement for Galliano. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of company policy. The fate of Galliano’s signature line’s presentation, slated for Sunday, remained a question mark. Galliano is also owned by LVMH. [source] Watch video footage of the drunken bar rant. Warning footage is offensive. John Galliano: ‘I Love Hitler’ (VIDEO)
His tirade was videoed by a friend of the people he was insulting – who were French and Italian, but not Jewish. Galliano, 50, was at the same Paris bar where he allegedly launched a vicious verbal attack on two people last week – which led to him being arrested and suspended by fashion label Christian Dior. After stating he loves Hitler and making the gassing remark, a woman is heard to say, ‘Oh my God’ before asking slurring Galliano if he had a problem. He said: “With you. You’re ugly.” Asked where he was from, he said: “Your a***hole.” Related articles
