M. Night Shyamalan bends it with The Last Airbender (Review)

Posted: 03 Jul 2010 12:27 PM PDT

The Last Airbender, the latest epic from M.Night Shyamalan, might not catch his earlier classics such as Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, however at the same time it’s not that bad as well. I was invited for the free screening of the movie and i felt lucky to be invited.

It’s almost a tradition among critics and Shyamalan haters to bash his movies for no specific reasons as such. I rate this excellent storyteller, directer, writer right up there with Spielberg and he deserves every bit of it. I don’t know how people can say so many bad things about this maverick director. Every movie scores some points and loses some and it’s also true with this one, however it’s not that bad as it is made out to be by very few people. The movie is literally panned by critics. OK…enough of this bashing now few things about movie.

I am a big fan of M.Night Shyamalan movies, however i also didn’t like his last two movies that much and also quite agree that the director’s best work was his movie called “Unbreakable.” It was a concept of a Superhero told by entirely innovative way & from the heart, which you can only expect from a genius of a Shyamalan’s stature. That was his best work till date according to me.

Now few things about the movie:-

Fresh from his “Happening” failure, Shyamalan showed daring to venture into an territory which was unknown to him and he was really standing on the edge when he decided to write, produce and direct The Last Airbender. And let me tell you he doesn’t disappoint you.

Special Effects:- The artist in Shyamalan is really at work in this movie. And he takes you to the great journey of Four nations Fire, Water, Earth and Air. I really liked Water bending and Earth bending. You can really see as if the whole movie is completely made out of Photoshop. I mean every scene is in detail and shows the genius of this person and also justifies why a studio like Paramount showed so much faith in him despite his last two failures. If you ask me, you can just go to watch this movie just for its special effects. It’s that good. However let me caution you if you are going to watch it in 3D as there’s not much difference in 2D and 3D versions as it’s a film which is converted in 3D and not entirely shot in 3D like James Cameron’s Avatar. However 3D won’t disappoint you in fight sequences otherwise the movie is all same even without glasses.

Direction:- It is one of the best directed movie that I have ever seen. Because to put an entire season of Nickelodeon series “Avatar – The Last Airbender” in just 1hour and 45 minutes is not a child’s play and Night manages it fantastically in movie and some of the fight scenes are brilliantly executed, especially the one that included “Aang” played by Noah Ringer. No one can handle children better than Night and he did everything to get the best out of them.

Story:- Well this is where the film’s woes starts and this is the reason why the film has been bashed by so many critics as they tried comparing the film with the famous Nickelodeon Cartoon series “Avatar – The Last Airbender.”  This film already had the advantage of a huge international fan base for the movie and it seems that this is turning out against the film rather than for the film. The story doesn’t move fast and when finally it moves, you find the movie is ending. Some of the scenes are executed in hurry while some of them are quite slow and this is all because poor script writing and this is where movie goes down otherwise it could have been another “Lord OF The Rings.”

Acting:- Again one more part of the film where it disappoints you. Almost all the actors are new except Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Jackson Rathbone (Twilight Series) and that’s why the dialogue delivery almost seems very duplicate and not original. That means sometimes you can really feel that the actors are forced to say these dialogues when they should have come naturally to them. This is just because they are too young to understand the meaning of these heavyweight dialogues which you can expect from the likes of Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson. This is where Shyamalan’s calculation as a script writer goes wrong. This is the most disappointing factor of the movie that really brings it down.

However in the end I would request readers to give it a one shot as it’s quite an entertaining movie despite some of its loopholes and in the end it will make you happy more than it disappoints you. You should really go and watch this movie just for its special effects. They are really heavenly. The film opened right below Twilight at No.2 position on Thursday garnering more than $ 16 million at the Box office and expected to make more than $50 million on the Independence Day Weekend.

My Verdict for the movie: 3.5 Stars out of 5 Stars
