BLACK GIRLS ROCK PHOTOS + VIDEO AIRS TONIGHT ON BET

Posted: 07 Nov 2010 11:13 AM PST

Black Girls Rock will be airing tonight on BET. The annual celebration is dedicated to promoting postive African-American role models.

As she took the stage at the start of BET’s “Black Girls Rock!” event, host Nia Long announced, “The golden rule for this evening is to believe in yourself fearlessly.” Her smile seemed to invite the audience to give it a try.

Anchored by stellar performances from Jill Scott, Keri Hilson, Ciara and other heavy hitters, the program’s 11 honorees — including Lifetime Achievement Award winner Missy Elliot — carried a message of empowerment. “Black Girls Rock!” is a tribute devoted to honoring African-American “Icons, Moguls and Sheroes” and will be televised for the first time on BET Sunday (November 7) at 8 p.m. ET.

An audience full of icons could make anyone feel intimidated, but Shontelle, who performed her hit single “Impossible,” embraced the challenge. “Walking onto the stage, I was a nervous wreck,” she admitted to MTV News. “[I was] in front of all these legends I look up to. I was so nervous at first, but then I realized everyone was singing along and it felt really great.”

“Black Girls Rock!” is supported by a diverse mix of talent; 2009 honorees included Janelle Monáe, Mary J. Blige and poet/activist Sonia Sanchez, but this year’s broadcast is poised to bring “Black Girls Rock!” to a global audience — a dream come true for founder Beverly Bond.

“I want young black girls to know that they matter,” the stylish Bond shared at a New York press screening of the awards on Tuesday. The celebrity DJ and former model founded the non-profit organization in 2006 to provide mentorship and programs to young black girls, including a DJ academy, college campus tours, a summer camp and poetry workshops.

“It’s up to us females to open doors for other females like the legends sitting here tonight,” Raven-Symoné said while accepting the Young, Black & Gifted Award. The actress — “The Cosby Show” vet was at 5 years old the youngest artist signed by RCA and has been producing since 18 — revealed that hearing “no” during her career has never stopped her from achieving her dreams. “Stay true to yourself,” she advised.

But the actress/singer wasn’t the youngest honoree of the night: The vibrant Nickelodeon star Keke Palmer was presented with the Who Got Next? Award. The 17-year-old, who won Favorite TV Actress at this year’s Kid Choice Awards, released her first fashion line in 2009 and is actively involved in charity work.

“A lot of black girls don’t know they rock,” Palmer stressed. She applauded the organization’s efforts to help girls improve their self-esteem. “[This] lets them know dreams do come true.”  [MTV]

Glee returns next week with a new episode featuring a cover version of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream.  We love the  updated track which is sung by a male chorus.  Oscar winning actress, Gwyneth Paltrow, is also scheduled to make an upcoming appearance on the hit show.  Gwyneth will play Mr. Schuster’s  love interest and perform a mashup of  Rihanna’s Umbrella with Singing in the Rain and Cee-lo’s F*k You.  Can’t wait for the episode!

GLEE TEENAGE DREAM MUSIC VIDEO

After a bye week, ‘Glee’ returns with a brand-new episode called ‘Never Been Kissed‘ in which the cast will perform a rendition of Katy Perry’s hit single ‘Teenage Dream.’

Newcomer Darren Criss takes the lead on this male-fronted cover, throwing a very ‘Glee’-like twist on a song that some would assume the likes of Lea Michele or Dianna Agron would perform.

Criss is rumored to play Kurt’s new boyfriend on the show, so the song is likely in reference to the budding love between the two William McKinley High School students: “You make me feel like I’m living a teenage dream / The way you turn me on, I can’t sleep / Let’s run away and don’t ever look back / Don’t ever look back.”

Sounds like a hot romance is brewing! ‘Never Been Kissed’ also features covers of ‘One Love,’ and two mash-ups of ‘Stop! in the Name of Love‘ and ‘Free Your Mind,’ as well as ‘Living on a Prayer‘ and ‘Start Me Up.’ [AOL]

LIL WAYNE JOINS DRAKE ON LAS VEGAS STAGE VIDEO

Posted: 07 Nov 2010 10:26 AM PST

Rapper Lil Wayne made a surprise guest appearance at Drake‘s concert.  Weezy has not performed on stage since his incarceration in Rikers Island. The hip hop star was freed this week and joined his Cash Money label mate at the Las Vegas show.

A recently freed Lil Wayne hit the stage for the first time since his release as he joined Drake during the finale of his “Light Dreams and Nightmares” tour on Saturday.

Drake teased the appearance throughout his set, telling fans about his first phone call with Lil Wayne since the Cash Money superstar left prison and later asking fans to fill in the words for Wayne’s verse in “Right Above It.”

But then Lil Wayne stormed the stage midway through “Miss Me,” causing the capacity crowd to erupt in cheers.

“I was gone ’til November, but I didn’t trip ’cause I know he was gonna get ‘em,” Wayne rapped, tweaking his lyrcs and pointing to Drake.

Wayne wore black jeans, white sneakers, a black skully hat and was shirtless as he stopped after his performance to address the audience.
“I’m back,” he said. “It feels good to be back. If you love me like I love you, please make some motherf—ing noise.” [MTV]

Kanye West didn't seem too happy with himself as he scrambled to deliver the latest jam in his free singles series — G.O.O.D. Friday had long since become Saturday afternoon by the time it was made available on his site. But "Looking For Trouble" was well worth the wait: West surprised fans by adding rising star and Jay-Z protege J. Cole to the mix, and the "Who Dat" rapper didn't disappoint. Grab the track below.

Cole's appearance (alongside G.O.O.D. Friday regulars Pusha T, Big Sean and Cyhi The Prince) came barely a day after a Ustream session in which Kanye had coyly sidestepped a fan question about whether the young North Carolina rapper might show up on one of these weekly tracks. He'd certainly be hard to miss. [IDOLATOR]

NEW MUSIC VIDEO : N.E.R.D HYPNOTIZE U

Posted: 07 Nov 2010 09:33 AM PST

N.E.R.D. has a new music video for the song Hypnotize U from their studio album Nothing.  The video is directed by Paul Hunter and features Pharrell serenading a harem of women while lathered up with soap in the shower.  Enjoy Pharrell getting steamy like D’Angelo in How Doe

Take one look at Pharrell Williams‘ resume — or scroll down his Wikipedia page — and you’ll see that he’s accomplished a lot.

But Williams, who is one-half of the genre-bending production duo The Neptunes and frontman for rap-rock trio N.E.R.D, said there’s still so much more he wants to achieve.

“I’d love to work with Eminem. I’d love to do it,” the 37-year-old Grammy winner said in a phone interview Tuesday from Seattle. “It just hasn’t happened yet.”

Williams, who has created hits for Jay-Z, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, said he’s interested in producing tunes for country artists, too: “I just haven’t had a chance yet. But I’m going to, for sure.”

He said he and Spears are “going back and forth” about work on her upcoming CD, and after scoring the soundtrack for the animated 3-D movie “Despicable Me” this year with Hans Zimmer and Heitor Pereira, he’s planning to do more such projects.

Williams wrapped up a national tour with virtual band Gorillaz on Wednesday. The rapper-producer also is busy promoting the latest N.E.R.D album, “Nothing,” out this week.

Williams said before finishing the new CD, the band decided to eliminate the songs from the early recording process.

“We started out doing one thing and we scrapped it all and decided we wanted to do something different. So we stopped everything and we started with nothing — and that’s what we titled the album,” he said.

Williams said the unused material could make its way to another record.

“That music is great. I just didn’t think it made sense for the next N.E.R.D album,” he said.

Though past N.E.R.D albums have been produced by its band members, the song “Hypnotize U” from the new CD was produced by electronic duo Daft Punk.

“I remixed ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger‘ for them like 10 years ago so that was a great feeling to do that (and) to work with them again,” Williams said, adding that he’s open to other producers creating music for him and his band.

He said the band plans to create music videos for each of the 10 tracks on “Nothing.”

“We were just thinking about the music for the most part,” he said of the recording process, “but then like once you, you know, heard the whole body of work, you’re like, ‘Man, we got to do something (more).’” [AP]
