KANYE WEST MATT LAUER TODAY SHOW INTERVIEW VIDEO + KANYE WEST CANCELS TODAY SHOW PERFORMANCE

Posted: 12 Nov 2010 08:14 AM PST

Kanye West’s awkward Today show interview aired Thursday morning on NBC.  ‘Ye was so unhappy with his treatment by  Matt Lauer that he unleashed a Twitter rant and canceled his upcoming concert performance. Watch the video if you missed it. Kanye doesn’t like that he was interrupted by Lauer with broll footage from the MTV VMA awards.  We must agree that it appears Matt Lauer seemed very focused on getting Kanye to apologize to President George W. Bush. However, George W. Bush never said “I apologize to the American people for my failure to handle the situation in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. I apologize to Kanye West if he thought that my lack of response to the catastrophe would make him feel that he needed to say, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.”

Kanye says that he no longer trusts the media and won’t do any more interviews.  Matt Lauer never issued a formal apology.

In the 14 months since his infamous run-in with Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West has maintained a rather contentious relationship with the media, one that has gone from a self-imposed blackout to tentative courting to whatever it is that happened late Tuesday (November 9), when ‘Ye took to Twitter to express his frustrations with the “Today” show after they played a snippet of their interview with him over images of the Swift incident.

“While I was trying to give the interview they started playing the ‘MTV’ under me with audio!!!!!!!” West wrote. “I don’t mess with Matt Lauer or the ‘Today’ Show … and that’s a very nice way for me to put it! … HE TRIED TO FORCE MY ANSWERS. IT WAS VERY BRUTAL AND I CAME THERE WITH ONLY POSITIVE INTENT.”

It would appear, for the time being at least, that West is once again done with the media — especially since, as he wrote in one tweet, “I don’t do press anymore” — and while it may seem like that situation won’t change, those who know the public-relations game best think otherwise.

“I think [West's Twitter rant] is an understandable reaction,” Michael Levine, who runs his own PR firm and formerly repped Michael Jackson, told MTV News. “When somebody has had a run of great success, they do not respond well to being crucified in the media. … They become like deer in the headlights. They get frozen.” MTV

Matt Lauer merely stated his position on what happened and said he was looking forward to having Kanye West as a guest on the Today show. This means that Lauer wants Kanye to lick his wounds and come on his morning program so it can boost their ratings.

And though, earlier in the weeik, West seemed to be announcing he’d take a break from Twitter when he wrote, “Gonna sit these next few plays out,” Lauer’s announcement apparently forced him to strap the pads back on. Early Friday morning (November 12), ‘Ye took to his Twitter account once again (from Dubai) to continue his screed against the show. ”I’m not performing on the ‘Today’ show for obvious reasons,” West wrote. “I’m so happy the world got to see a small piece of ‘the set up.’ I blatantly said I’m not performing [on the show] on a tweet … and the next day they stll announced a performance.

“Do you guys see what I’m saying now?” he continued. “This is just a small slice of the day-to-day bullsh– that goes on that helps to precipitate the idea that I['m] such an a–hole. Cause when I don’t perform ‘Oh Nooow I’m the one that’s crazy or a jerk.’ ”

The tweet West was referring to was a message he posted on Tuesday, in which he wrote, “I don’t mess with Matt Lauer or the ‘Today’ show … and that’s a very nice way for me to put it.” Whether or not that constitutes him “blatantly” announcing he would not perform on the show is a matter that could be debated endlessly, but West wasn’t about to allow semantics to slow him down, as he continued dissecting his “Today” interview in a series of messages.

“I want you guys to look at that footage and start to put everything together now. It’s very simple to call someone angry or spoiled or the one thousand names I’ve been called, but it’s harder to try to take a look at what’s really behind the curtain,” he wrote. “I’m so happy that my real fans are not as ‘basic’ as the media makes them out to be. Did you see them try to justify playing the audio [of West's infamous VMA run-in with Taylor Swift] under my interview? Yo, sometimes you’re just wrong and it ain’t nothing you can say to justify it. Believe me, I know!” [MTV]
